Train Station Introductions

Muden

100-year old relics remain at this mountain pass station

There is a convenience store in front of the station, and the other closest things are the rest stop “Mima” and the Uwajima Road-Mima Interchange. This unmanned, single platform, single track station is in a considerably removed location. Although Muden Station is a mere 900 meters away from Iyo-Miyanoshita Station, you must descend 140 meters down Mado Pass and travel 6.3 kilometers in order to get to the next station, Kita-Uwajima. After beginning operation under the former Uwajima Railways in October 1914 (Taisho 3), there were times when the train could not make the climb up the steep slope and would come to a standstill. It is said that passengers even had to get out and push the engine and passenger cars all the way up to Muden Station. Even today, there are occasions during bad weather when the wheels spin out and the train stalls.
